We’ve started to make a list of everything we need for Christmas. Presents to buy, cards to write and of course, the all-important food and drink. When it comes to what wine to pop on the table, both at Christmas and throughout the year, we’re big fans of a locally produced wine from our home county of Cornwall.
It may seem strange to think of drinking wine from Cornwall, but the vineyards of the westcountry enjoy long sunny summer days, and sheltered winters, leading to the creation of some award-winning white, red and sparkling wines.
Perhaps the most famous is Camel Valley, a family-run vineyard established on the banks of the Camel River in 1989. Multi-award-winning, the wine produced here travels far and wide, including being exported to Japan and being stocked in Waitrose stores throughout the UK.
The online shop facility means you can order a bottle or two to be delivered, and they offer a great mixed case option if you really can’t decide. If you’re in Cornwall, you can also take part in a guided tour of the estate, complete (of course) with tastings. You’ll be a connoisseur in no time!
Head to the other end of the county and you’ll find another award-winning vineyard on the hills overlooking Mounts Bay, near Penzance – Polgoon. Choose from their extensive range of drinks, all produced in Cornwall and available to buy online, including still and sparkling wines, proper Cornish cider and fresh fruit juices.
Again, if you’re a local, or visiting the area, you can enjoy tours, tastings and a delicious lunch at the on-site Vine House Kitchen.
But, as everyone knows, a good wine is not just for Christmas. Bottles of these wonderful Cornish wines can often be found aboard our 3 beautiful yachts as part of the refreshments we can provide on our yacht charter packages. If you would like to enjoy a true taste of Cornwall while on the water off the coast of our beautiful county, get in touch with the Bowman team to discuss your perfect trip.
