The World Pilot Gig Championships returns to the Isles of Scilly for the 29th year from the 4th – 6th May. This exciting annual event is described as “an island spectacle as a carnival atmosphere descends across the archipelago”. Bowman Yacht Charters offer the perfect opportunity to get up-close to all the action, as well as being a wonderful alternative to staying on the islands, with a trip to the Scillies from the 3rd – 8th May.
The majority of the championship participants come from the South West, where gigs are still built and raced locally, however the ‘Champs’ are growing year on year. Over 150 gigs are expected to attend in 2018, with entrants from as far afield as Holland and the USA.
Hundreds of people descending on these beautiful islands means that accommodation and spectator options are often in short supply. That’s why chartering one of our three beautiful yachts can offer an excellent solution. You and your guests can be part of the action, right alongside the races on the water.
The racing has its origins in the 19th Century, when ships arriving from transatlantic crossings would signal for a local pilot to guide them safely into the shelter of St Mary’s Pool. The local gigs would then race to reach the ship first, in order to claim the job and therefore, the pilot’s fee.
We’ve designed a package to ensure that you can make the most of the event and your time in the Scillies. We recommend travelling out to the islands on the 3rd May, where you and your guests can enjoy bed and breakfast onboard between 4th and 7th May, before returning on the 8th, however we’re happy discuss other schedules.
Our beautiful, comfortable yachts Tivoli and Annie Jo can each sleep 5 guests, or for larger groups Yemaya of Helford can accommodate up to 9 individuals. With the majority of the rooms already booked on the Scillies, staying onboard will really allow you to make the most of the weekend.
Between racing, you can choose to go ashore to soak up the atmosphere and indulge in delicious local food and drink. Alternatively, enjoy the peace and tranquility of being at sea, and let our team look after you with refreshments and sightseeing.
